How to read this list

Where the numbers come from

Employers that offer group health, dental, vision, life or disability coverage file Form 5500 with the U.S. Department of Labor each year, and Schedule A of that filing names the broker paid on each insured plan. We count, for every Dallas–Fort Worth broker office, how many Texas employers named it on 2024 filings. How the directory is built.

What it leaves out

Employers with fewer than 100 participants generally do not have to file for an insured welfare plan, so brokers who work mostly with small businesses are under-counted. Self-funded plans with no insurance contract have no Schedule A, so brokers who specialise in self-funding are under-counted too. A broker named on a filing may share the account with another firm.

Does size mean better?

No. A large count means a broker has many clients and carrier relationships; it says nothing about service. For a 50-person company, a broker with 20 similar clients may be a better fit than one with 500 large ones. How to choose a benefits broker.
